Book Review: In the Field of Grace by Tessa Afshar

This author has been on my radar for quite a long time now and I am happy I finally got around to reading this book.

In the Field of Grace‘ is the retelling of the biblical story in the book of Ruth. While this is a well-known story to most Christians and non-Christians alike, it is a very short story in the bible which does not tell us much about the main players. In this book, the author brings the story to life by introducing the reader to the culture and patterns of the times it was set. Also, while staying true to the original theme of the story, she developed each character into relatable people that readers can understand, empathize with and love. The story of Ruth continues till this day to reflect love, kindness, loyalty and determination in a world that is moving far away from these virtues.

This was a slow burn read for me and in hindsight, I would attribute it to the fact that I was familiar with the original story and wasn’t expecting any surprises. However, not too far off into the story, I became hooked as the author introduced more interesting characters and created a love story around Ruth and Boaz using the miscommunication troupe common in a lot of romance novels. This got me on my toes and literally screaming at both of them while at the same time rooting for their happily ever after. Boaz’s back story was also a most welcome addition, making it more believable and giving context to his single status at an old age amongst others. To say the least, I was sad when the story ended because I wanted it to go on, to experience life with Ruth and Boaz after the birth of their son and how they aged gracefully in love and peace.

It’s no surprise that I highly recommend this book to all Christian/biblical fiction lovers. I am now going on a binge reading phase of this author’s books. Watch out for more reviews of her books here!
