Book Review: Before the Storm by Amaka Azie

This book is the first in a three-book series and I was excited to go into reading it because the author is one of my favorite Nigerian romance fiction authors.

The story follows Nkem and Tunde who got divorced due to Tunde’s infidelity but after Tunde has a stint with death, both parties begin to look at life from a different perspective and the possibilities of a restoration of their broken relationship. The main themes in this story include the effects of infidelity on relationships, trauma, forgiveness, healing, restoration and second chances.

I’m particularly not very good with reading stories centered around infidelity but this is one of the most realistic perspectives I have come across and I applaud the author for the way this story was written. I loved the way we were able to see the vulnerable sides of both protagonists and how not only the root cause of Tunde’s infidelity was brought to light but also the core reasons why Nkem decided to take the highway to divorce him. This wasn’t an easy book for me to read because I sometimes struggled with some of the moves both Nkem and Tunde took on their path to reconciliation, so I had to take breaks between my reading to ponder on some of this. However, as someone who believes in forgiveness and knows that restoration in possible in broken relationships if both parties are willing to let go of the past and the spouse/partner at fault is repentant, I was happy to watch this couple go through the process of healing together. I also love to read romance-ish stories about married people as well so it was sort of a treat despite its heavy theme.

I highly recommend this book and it is one book I would love to discuss with the author and other bookish friends (after I convince them to read it) to hear their views on this topic. Many thanks to the author for sending me copies of this series. Look out for my review of the second book in the series, ‘Through the Fire’.
