Genre: Biblical/Historical Fiction

‘Bread of Angels’ is another biblical fictional story that follows Lydia who appeared in Acts 16 as a seller of purple. Lydia is mainly known for welcoming the early Apostles into her home and the first to receive and accept the good news of salvation in Philippi and Europe as a whole. However, this book does not only expand on the little we know of this minor character in the bible but creates a believable coming of age tale about Lydia’s life from her childhood up until when she encounters Paul and the other disciples. Like other biblical fiction novels, the author paints a vivid picture of how life must have been in those times where men dominated the world of business and the possibility of a woman like Lydia would have become an influential businesswoman. The story takes the reader on a tumultuous journey with Lydia from Rome to Philippi, her encounter with a young Jewish girl who introduces her to the God of the Jews and how this friendship brings comfort and support to both women as they go through one ordeal after another. The major themes in this story include faith, courage, grief, rejection, betrayal and the peace that comes from a relationship with Christ Jesus.

There was so much to learn from Lydia’s journey through life, but the most outstanding message is the fundamental need to build a solid trust in God for our daily provision no matter how things look on the outside which in this story was likened to the trust God wanted the Israelites to have when they were in the wilderness, and he fed them with manna daily. Also, it highlighted how a good turn and kindness even when faced with your own troubles may be the key that will open many doors for you as it did for Lydia when she met and befriended Rachel who became the family she had lost.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it to all Christian fiction, biblical fiction and historical fiction lovers.
