As you may already know, the author is one of my top 10 favorite authors of all time and I am almost done with reading all her published books. This is the first book in a three-book series, and I was excited to go into reading it.
Set in the beautiful city of Rome, Veronica, a 75-year-old woman decides to rent one of the apartments in her house for next to nothing for three months to “an English woman of a certain age” to rediscover herself and live life to the fullest. Beth, who has just dropped her daughter off at university and received the most shocking revelation from her husband as he wishes for them to get a divorce, sees Veronica’s advertisement in a newspaper and decides to apply. Beth arrives in Rome and is given daily tasks by Veronica and her best friend Marina which will help her rediscover herself and become more self-aware and independent. At first Beth is resistant but as time goes by, she takes the time to reflect on her life and marriage which opens her up to the prospects of new beginnings in different aspects of her life. The fact that she meets Nico, a handsome Italian musician is the icing on the cake.
This was another fantastic read and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Firstly, Rome is now up on my list of places I would love to visit as this book has brought it to life more than I have ever seen on TV. I mostly enjoyed the friendly banter between Ronnie and her best friend, and this made me hope for such a great companion in my old age. It was also interesting to watch Beth’s journey and how it progressed to the end which to be honest was a bit predictable (thus my 4-star rating) but was still lovely. It’s amazing how this author writes these really relatable and realistic stories that are both thought-provoking and thug at your heartstrings at the same time. I will be reading the second book in this series so watch out for my review. I highly recommend.
