This is the second book in “The Rome Apartment” series, and I was curious as to where this one would take me.
In this book, Ronnie’s apartment is once again available to have yet another woman who wishes to rediscover herself in Rome. Shortly after Annie the new guest arrives at the apartment, Nadia, Ronnie’s daughter also appears at her doorstep, pregnant and abandoned by her partner. Ronnie believes this is an opportunity for her to build the relationship she had always hoped to have with Nadia for so long and also excited that she is a soon-to-be grandmother. However, things take a turn as Annie makes a big revelation about her identity that throws Ronnie into the deep end, awakening her buried past and the horrid secret she has kept from everyone she knows for almost 50 years. The major themes in this story include ghosts from the past that come to haunt us, perspective, found family, redemption, second chances, love and new beginnings.
This book was such a page-turner. What a story! What a roller-coaster ride! I couldn’t stop reading until I got to the end. It was that good. Thought-provoking and gripping to the last page and I cannot recommend this book enough. There is so much to here but the major take-away for me would be the need to release the ghosts that we carry from our past and live life in the present so as to avoid ruining what we have going for us in the present and future. Ronnie will always have a place in my heart regardless of all that came to light in this book. Infact, I was endeared by her and had more respect and understanding of her character and the choices she made. Annie’s quest for closure was also understandable and timely as this helped Ronnie and even Nadia (who I couldn’t for the life of me connect with her character) to bring all that had been buried to the surface. It was also nice to see Marina’s character from another perspective and how Ronnie and Marina’s friendship was not only a comfort for both women but also an important ingredient to how their lives had turned out. Overall, it was such a splendid experience, and this is why I would always read this author’s work. This is my first 5-star read of the year and I will be pleasantly surprised to read something else that will top this story.
I highly, highly recommend and I can’t wait to read the third book in this series.
