This is one of my most anticipated books for this year because in the last three years, the author’s books keep making it to my top 5 best books of the year, so I was excited to get into it. Infact, I didn’t read it for a while after I got it because I was saving it for a good time when I had no distractions and was fully committed to reading it. Now on to the review.
‘Just for the Summer’ features Justin and Emma who both believe they have a curse. Actually, a curse for them but a blessing to those who date them as these people always move on to meet their soul mates after they break up with them. They discover they have the same situation when Justin writes about it on social media and Emma contacts him. They eventually plan to meet and date for 6 weeks with the hope that they will break up and move on to meet their own soul mates. However, as they get to know more about each other, they both realize that they want more than what they had bargained for.
This book kept me in a chokehold! It is so far my best read of the year yet. Abby Jimenez is a star because I don’t know how she is able to drop hit after hit every single time. I can’t express how this story and ALL the characters made me feel. There was a lot to unpack in this story around childhood trauma, abandonment, toxic relationships, grief, and mental health problems yet it was written with empathy and wit giving all the characters a voice to express their emotions. Justin and Emma were brilliant, but ultimately, I need a best friend like Maddy because she was the hero in this story so far as I am concerned. I was also happy to meet characters from the first and second books in this series which made the story more familiar like I was reading about people I already knew. Also, having visited Minneapolis where the story is mostly set, I felt the nostalgia that comes when reading about places you have visited or are familiar to you and there were quite a few in the story such as the ‘Mall of America’. It felt like I was right there in the mall with them and that was awesome. It was a happily ever after I really needed to read and now, I’m here waiting patiently AGAIN for her next book.
I highly RECOMMEND!
