I have had this book on my radar for a couple of months with several good reviews about it, so I made a conscious effort to put it in my January TBR especially since it’s a short read. I went into reading this book open minded as this is the first time I am interacting with the author’s work and haven’t read a play in a long time.

The story follows the family of a late prominent Archbishop of a mega church and how they all are dealing with the grief that follows his demise. His only son is expected to step into his father’s shoes. This expectation and other issues spiral him into a situation which may tarnish the family name and the archbishop’s legacy forever. His last daughter is in hiding with a dark secret she can’t allow to slip and the middle child who is the sensible sibling is saddled with the burden of all what her siblings have done. Their mother unexpectedly arrives in Lagos from Port Harcourt to put everyone on the straight and narrow but ends up being served with a can of worms. This is a story about lies, sexual assault, secret lives, grief and how this can negatively affect a family.

This was a quick read but intense as it can be. It didn’t feel like I was reading a play instead it felt more like a short story with a bang especially at the end. I enjoyed the back and forth with little revelations at every corner until the final hit at the end of the story. My mouth was open even when my mind had suspected something wild, I just didn’t expect that ending. I definitely love it when an author throws me totally off and this one was well done. However, I left the story wanting more and perhaps that was the intent of the author, but I already imagine it to be a really engaging and interesting novel if is written as one.

I highly recommend this book to all readers especially if you are getting into reading for the first time or coming back to it. It is short, interesting and relatable. Looking forward to reading more of this author’s work in the near future.
