I have been a huge fan of this author since I read ‘The Love Hypothesis’. Apart from the fact that I loved the story, I instantly felt connected to her as I am a scientist myself. Therefore, I was looking forward to reading this new release by her and even pre-ordered it on Audible.
The story follows three athletes, Penelope, Scarlett, and Lukas. Pen and Lukas have been an item since their teenage years but realize that they are no more compatible. They decide to break-up and Pen basically hooks Lukas up with Scarlett her teammate and “best friend” because she believes Scarlett will provide Lukas with what she lacked in the relationship. What starts as a fling, morphs into something bigger than what Scarlett, Lukas, and even Pen could ever imagine which leads to question to their relationships as a group and with each other.
Ordinarily, I would not write a review for most 2 Stars reads because It would probably end up as a big moan about a book I should have just DNFed. But in this case, I thought it right to do so for the sake of honesty and transparency as the author has been a favorite I have hyped a lot in the past. Now we have that out of the way, I will move on to my thoughts.
I honestly don’t know what we were supposed to take-away from this story because it got me cringing half of the time. ALL the characters were unlikable, and the premise of the story is just meer. I mean, the very fact that Pen hooked Lukas and Scarlett up and then became besties afterwards (because she had another bestie at the beginning of the story) just blows my mind. Lukas on the other hand was mostly annoying and unrelatable. The whole hype about all things Swedish was also borderline tiring. Now, let’s even talk about the “supposed” kink in the book, it was giving only verbal kink, not that I wanted it to be excessive, I just feel that if you are writing about something, it should be well represented which in this case I don’t believe it was having read some books with kink (not my thing at all, to be clear and didn’t know it was a theme in this book until I started reading it) in the past, I had a basic expectation which wasn’t met. I will cut my rant short here by just saying, I didn’t enjoy this book at all however, I will still be reading another book by the author and take this as a blip in the system.
If you love romance, I’m not sure you will like this one, but I can’t stop you from reading it so go ahead and try it if you are a curious cat.

The Author:

Ali Hazelwood is a multi-published author—alas, of peer-reviewed articles about brain science, in which no one makes out and the ever after is not always happy. Originally from Italy, she lived in Germany and Japan before moving to the U.S. to pursue a Ph.D. in neuroscience. She recently became a professor, which absolutely terrifies her. When Ali is not at work, she can be found running, crocheting, eating cake pops, or watching sci-fi movies with her two feline overlords (and her slightly-less-feline husband).
