This is a novella that I immediately jumped in to read after my last read by the author because at that point I felt I needed more of her stories.
This is a forced proximity trope set during a Valentine’s Day weekend that follow next door neighbors, Charlotte and Kevin who are stuck in their flats as the flight of stairs up to their apartments have been removed (yes removed!). This is the first time they ever communicate with each other and as they both try to make sense of the situation together, they realize that they enjoy each other’s company. By the next day, they discover more about themselves, and begin to wonder if this could lead to something more by the end of the weekend.
This was a really quick enjoyable read. As always Abby tackles a very important but sensitive issue around stalking in this story, and I must say she executed it well. It is both enlightening and sad to learn how stalking affects victims and also how the laws around offenders are quite loose which gives them the power to continue to disrupt lives. The main characters Charlotte and Kevin were easily likable and relatable, so it made it even a better experience getting to know them and watching them grow comfortable around each other. Like most good short stories, it left me wanting more and wishing it was full novel where the characters would be fleshed out more and not only the main characters but also their friends and the old ladies Kevin taught classes to (they were hilarious). The story ended with some heavy action which gave it the punch it needed but I still felt hungry for more so I hope she will bring these characters back in a proper novel in the near future.
If you are looking for a quick short read, I highly recommend this short story.
