This is the second book in the “Sovereign Love” series by the author and after reading the first book in this series I was eagerly looking forward to reading this one. You can check out my review of the first book HERE
‘The One Who Loves Me’ follows Amara who we met in book 1 as Teeyanah’s best friend and by this time has finished her training as a nurse. She has now landed her dream job in the hospital she always wanted to work in and on her first day bumps into Raymond, a medical doctor in a not-so-pleasant circumstance. Although, Amara doesn’t like anything about Raymond at first especially as he doesn’t fit the criteria for her on her “perfect guy” list, as she gets to know him, she begins to become fond of him. Then, she meets Jamar who ticks all the boxes on her list and Amara becomes confused as to who she really wants to be with. The fact that Raymond is Yoruba and she is Igbo doesn’t make things easy as she knows her mother has said she will not support her marrying anyone from the Yoruba tribe. This story explores themes such as the importance of trusting God in our journey through life, courage, perseverance through difficulty, true friendship, the importance of Godly counsel and Christian community, and Godly relationships.
This started as a slow burn for me, and it took me a while to get into the story. This was particularly because I didn’t warm up to Amara’s character for at least half of the book but as I kept going, I didn’t know when I became invested in the story and really loved how it all came together in the end. Raymond on the other hand was such a likable character and despite all that he had been through in life, the fact that he still persevered and continued to trust God was inspirational and worth emulating. Again, the author has taken us through a relatable and realistic representation of how God sees us and works with us even when we go our own way. I also loved how the relationship between Raymond and Amara grew to become meaningful even after they both erred in one way or the other. Overall, this was a breath of fresh air, and it warms my heart that we have Christian fiction like this that can be read by both young adults and adults. There was so much to learn and take away from this story and I definitely recommend it to all Christian fiction lovers.
Now I am off to read the third installment of this series and hope I enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed the first two books. Will you read this book? Share with us in the comments.
