Genre: Biblical Fiction

I have sat on reading this series for so many years and because these are the only books by Francine Rivers I am yet to read, I decided to challenge myself to read them all before her new book comes out. I am not sure why I have not been motivated or interested in reading these stories. Perhaps, it’s because they are all male-centered characters or minor characters of the bible but on second thoughts, these should be the very reasons why I should actually read them to broaden my understanding and become more knowledgeable (hopefully).

‘The Priest’ follows Aaron, the brother of Moses the prophet whom God used to deliver the children of Isreal from Egypt after 400 years of slavery. Moses begged God to release him from the task of leading this course and used the excuse of not being eloquent enough, so God appointed Aaron to be his spokesman and after they left Egypt ordained him as the first priest to serve in the tabernacle. This is a fictionalized account of the life of Aaron while staying true to the original story in scripture.

In general, I didn’t enjoy reading this story. Whether it was the fact that I found Aaron’s character quite annoying (God forgive me) or the children of Isreal just literally making me want to pull my hair out, I’m not too sure. Either way, I was frustrated with all of them to say the least. The worst part for me is the fact that this actually happened so it got me really thinking of how just like the Israelites of old we (mankind) are all stiff-necked and would rather go our own way instead of following God’s way. On the flip side, I liked the way the author was able to create a relatable and compassionate view of Aaron’s struggles, and I guess this was one of the take-aways for me from the story. Also, typical of Francine Rivers, it was well written but the story still infuriated me.

If you love reading biblical fiction, you will most likely enjoy reading this book. I would still recommend.
