This is the third book in this series; however, I read it after I read the first book. Since I didn’t quite enjoy the first story, I was hoping for something better with this one. David and Jonathan’s friendship always intrigued me and I was curious to see how the author would portray this in her story.
This is a fictionalized account of Jonathan’s life while staying true to biblical accounts. Jonathan was the first son of King Saul, the first anointed king of Isreal. While he was known to be loyal to his father Saul, he also developed a close friendship and brotherhood with David whom his father grew to hate as time went by. This story tries to show how Jonathan navigated this very difficult situation and also most often than not stood as a peace maker between his father and David.
I really enjoyed reading this story as it started with Saul and Jonathan’s life before Saul was anointed king up until when David came into their lives as a harp player to soothe Saul’s troubled soul and thereafter, help Isreal conquer their most feared enemy Goliath. Jonathan’s character in this story is depicted as a God-fearing, loyal, faithful, and loving man who always stood on what was right even when he knew it would cause him much pain. His ability to love both David and his father without taking sides (only taking God’s side) was a gift many don’t possess and that was really admirable. I loved the way we were able to see life in those times through his eyes and feel his frustrations and pain especially when his father became rebellious and refused to listen to God’s direction. Unfortunately, his obedience and support for his father led him to die with him in battle which in hindsight was God’s will as David had already been anointed to be king over Isreal and that would not have been if Jonathan was still alive.
Francine Rivers has told a believable and enjoyable tale that would keep you yearning for more (I didn’t want the story to end) and I highly recommend this book to all Christian fiction lovers.
