What Reading Christian Fiction Books Has Done For Me and Can Do For You

Many years ago, before I ventured into reading Christian fiction, I’ll admit it, for the longest time, I wasn’t sure how I felt about Christian fiction. I thought it would either be too “preachy” or maybe not as engaging as the mainstream books everyone was raving about. But then, one day, I picked one up. And then another. And before I knew it, I was hooked.

Reading Christian fiction has done more for me than just keep me entertained, it’s actually deepened my faith, challenged my perspectives, and given me hope in the most unexpected ways. Let me share a few of the surprising gifts it has brought into my life.

Sometimes when I read Scripture, I struggle with bridging the gap between Bible times and my modern-day struggles. But Christian fiction has a way of weaving biblical truth into stories that look and feel like my life today.

I remember reading about a character juggling faith, career, and relationships, and thinking, “Wow, that’s me!” Seeing faith in action in the middle of heartbreaks, deadlines, messy families, or even small-town dramas, reminds me that God is present in the ordinary.

I know it sounds a little funny, but some of the characters I’ve met in Christian fiction feel like people I could text or grab coffee with. They wrestle with doubts, make mistakes, and yet keep coming back to God.

There was a story I recently read where one of the main characters struggled with forgiveness, and honestly, I felt like the author had been eavesdropping on my own life. Walking with that character through her journey helped me process my own.

Christian fiction isn’t just about the story, it’s about the subtle ways truth gets planted in your heart. Sometimes I’ll read a line that hits me harder than a Sunday sermon. Not because it’s new truth, but because the story makes it stick.

Like when a character prayed in her darkest moment, and I realized, “Oh, I’ve been avoiding prayer in mine.” Or when someone chose love over bitterness, and I felt the nudge to do the same.

There’s something powerful about reading stories where God shows up. Sometimes quietly, sometimes dramatically in the middle of brokenness. It reminds me that if He can show up for them (even fictional “them”), He can show up for me too.

During one particularly hard season, reading a Christian romance (yes, the swoony kind!) actually encouraged me that joy is possible again, and that God hasn’t forgotten me.

Finally, Christian fiction has simply made reading fun for me. The suspense, the romance, the family sagas, it’s all there, but with a redemptive thread that leaves me feeling uplifted instead of drained.

And can we just say: Christian authors are bringing the drama, the humor, the heartache, and the healing. I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, I’ve stayed up way too late telling myself, “Just one more chapter…”

Reading Christian fiction hasn’t just been a hobby, it’s become a way God whispers to me through a story. It’s made my faith more tangible, given me hope, and even reminded me to see my own life as part of a much bigger story He’s writing.

So if you’ve ever wondered whether Christian fiction is “worth it,” let me tell you: it is. Grab one, dive in, and let God surprise you through the pages.

Have you read any Christian fiction lately? Did it speak to you in a personal way? I’d love to hear your recommendations (because my TBR list can never be too long!).

Also, watch out for my post on some of my favorite Christian fiction books I would always recommend.

Thanks for stopping by and stay blessed.
