Reading the World Through a Christian Lens: How to Discern What Builds You Up Spiritually

Books have the power to shape how we think, feel, and live. Stories can comfort us, challenge us, or quietly shift our values. For Christian readers, this makes one question deeply important: How do I choose what to read in a way that honors God?

We live in a world overflowing with books. Christian fiction, secular literature, romance, thrillers, fantasy, historical fiction, even books with darker themes like horror or moral conflict. As Christians, we’re not called to live in fear of every page, but neither are we called to consume content carelessly.

That’s where discernment comes in.

The Apostle Paul gives us a powerful foundation in 1 Corinthians 10:23:

“Everything is permissible—but not everything is beneficial.”

This reminds us that while we have freedom in Christ, not everything we are free to consume is healthy for our souls. Discernment is not about legalism or creating a list of forbidden genres, it is about asking, “Is this beneficial to my walk with God?”

Legalism says: “Good Christians should only read Christian books.”

Discernment says:
“Whether it’s Christian or not, does this align with God’s truth or pull my heart away from Him?”

Legalism focuses on external rules.
Discernment focuses on internal transformation.

Legalism leads to pride or guilt.
Discernment leads to wisdom, growth, and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.

Here are intentional questions to help you evaluate whether a book is spiritually beneficial:

1. Does this book draw me closer to or farther from God?
  • Does it awaken gratitude, compassion, or deeper faith?
  • Or does it stir doubt, cynicism, or spiritual numbness?
2. Does it glorify sin or expose it?
  • Some books deal with sin, pain, and brokenness—but how do they deal with it?
  • Does the story celebrate immorality and make it attractive?
  • Or does it display consequences, redemption, repentance, or lessons learned?
3. Does it leave me feeling uplifted, convicted, or dulled spiritually?

After reading:

  • Do I feel inspired to love God and others more?
  • Do I feel gently convicted to grow or change?
  • Or do I feel heavy, drained, or desensitized to sin?

Here’s a gentle guide to help make reading decisions with grace and wisdom:

1. Check Your Heart Before You Check the Genre

Instead of saying “Christians shouldn’t read this genre,” ask:
Why do I want to read this? What am I feeding, my spirit or my flesh?

2. Look for Truth, Even in Fiction

A book doesn’t have to be labeled “Christian” to contain truth. Look for stories that:

  • Show sacrifice, redemption, forgiveness, justice, or hope.
  • Reflect the brokenness of humanity but also hint at something higher.
3. Pay Attention to the Fruit

Jesus said, “You will know them by their fruits.”
What is the fruit of this book in your life?

  • More peace, empathy, hope?
  • Or more anxiety, lust, bitterness, or disbelief?
4. Give the Holy Spirit Permission to Say “Stop”

If a book starts distorting your thoughts, sparking temptation, or dulling your desire for God, put it down. That isn’t weakness. That’s wisdom.

What if reading wasn’t just entertainment but a form of worship?

When we read through a Christian lens:

  • We see how God’s truth is woven into human stories.
  • We learn to recognize lies, deception, and false hope.
  • We grow in compassion for people who struggle like characters do.
  • We begin to think, “Lord, what are You showing me through this?”

You don’t need to live in fear of books, but you also don’t need to read everything. The goal is not perfection, but purity of heart. The invitation is to read with wisdom, joy, and awareness of God’s presence.

So next time you pick up a book, simply ask:

  • Does it bring me closer to God?
  • Does it feed my soul or dull it?
  • Is this beneficial to my walk with Christ?

Because in a world full of stories, we are still living the most important one—His story, written in our lives.
