How to incorporate Reading Books into your lifestyle in 2026: Practical Tips For Busy People

I used to be the girl who would read at least a hundred books a year. However, the last three years have been busier than usual as I have made several huge life changes, so I had to come up with a strategy to help keep me reading despite my current busy schedule. If you’re like me, where between work, family, and daily responsibilities, finding time to read can feel impossible, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!

The truth is you don’t need endless free time to incorporate reading books into your life. You just need a strategy that fits into your lifestyle. Here are some practical tips to help you read more this year, no matter how hectic life gets.

Aiming to read 50 books this year? That’s great! But if you only read 2 books last year, try setting a goal that challenges you without feeling overwhelming, maybe one book a month or a total of 20 books? Last year, I read 44 books and my reading goal this year is 60 books. I hope to meet this goal but to be honest it’s not about the numbers at the end of the day but enjoying the journey and stories.

Pro tip: Use apps like Goodreads or StoryGraph to track your progress and stay motivated!

You don’t need hours to read, just 15-20 minutes a day can make a big difference!

  • Read in the morning instead of scrolling social media.
  • Carry a book (or Kindle) with you for small pockets of time (waiting rooms, commute, lunch breaks).
  • Replace TV time or bedtime scrolling with reading.

Little moments add up, and before you know it, you’ll finish more books than expected!

Who says reading has to involve sitting down with a physical book? Audiobooks are a game-changer for busy people! You can listen while:

✔️ Driving
✔️ Doing chores
✔️ Exercising
✔️ Cooking (one of my favorites)

Try platforms like Audible, Scribd, or Libby to get started. If you struggle with focus, start with a short book or an engaging fiction story!

If you’re not enjoying a book, you won’t make time to read it. Don’t force yourself through books you find boring—reading should be enjoyable, not a chore!

  • Pick books that excite you.
  • Try different genres and formats (graphic novels, short stories, poetry).
  • Don’t hesitate to DNF (Did Not Finish) books that don’t engage you.

One additional thing I have done this year is to curate a list of the books (they are currently 31 in number) I would like to read both new releases and some on my TBR list (To-be-read). This list consist of mostly books I already believe I will enjoy reading because they are either by my favorite authors or genres. Reading should be fun, so read what sparks joy! I will share my reading list with you soon before the end of this month.

Being part of a reading community can keep you motivated and accountable. Try:

  • Book clubs (online or in person)
  • Social media book discussions (#bookstagram, #booktok)
  • Reading challenges (Goodreads, 52 Books in 52 Weeks, etc.)

This year, I am doing something new, I joined a 2026 virtual Christian fiction reading challenge. I generally don’t like the idea of book clubs simply because I feel it’s a bit too restrictive for me because I am a mood reader and I may not be in the mood to read the particular “book of the month”. However, in my quest to read more and more Christian fiction books as part of my growing a deeper relationship with God, I have decided to give this a shot. Thankfully, I have already finished reading the book of the month for January 2026 and I am really proud of myself. I will be sharing my review of the book with you soon and I will make sure I include the fact that it is part of the challenge. I look forward to reading all 11 remaining books slated for the year.

The Pomodoro method isn’t just for productivity, it works for reading too!

  • Set a timer for 25 minutes and read without distractions.
  • Take a 5-minute break, then start again if you have time.

This method trains your focus and helps you get through more pages!

One of the best ways to read more is to make books accessible. Keep books:

✔️ On your nightstand
✔️ In your bag
✔️ On your phone or Kindle
✔️ In your car

Having books within reach means you’ll always have something to read when you have spare time!

Sometimes you’re in the mood for something light, other times you want something deep. Having a few books in different genres helps you switch depending on your mood!

Try:
📖 A fiction book for fun
📖 A self-help or nonfiction book for learning
📖 An audiobook for multitasking

This way, you never feel stuck and always have something to read! This is one of my superpowers.

Create a cozy reading atmosphere to make reading feel like a treat, not a task!

  • Light a candle
  • Make a cup of tea or coffee
  • Get a comfy reading chair
  • Set up a dedicated reading space

When reading feels relaxing and rewarding, you’ll want to do it more often!

Finally, don’t stress if you fall behind on your reading goals. Life happens! Reading should be something you enjoy, not something that adds pressure.

If you’re reading more than you did last year, that’s already a win! Celebrate your progress and enjoy the journey.

No matter how busy life gets, small changes in your daily routine can help you read more books this year. Whether it’s setting a realistic goal, listening to audiobooks, or making reading a habit, you’ll be surprised how much you can accomplish!
