I have been a fan of this author for so many years and have read quite a number of her books. However, I haven’t read her latest book series (most of her books are in series) titled the flower series and I think I am quite ready to read them now. I thought starting with the prequel would be a good place to have a feel of what is in store for me, so that’s why I chose to begin with this book.
White Tulips follows Jordan and Bisola who met, fell in love and got married. As they navigate through life with their two children, things go from bad to worse as Jordan’s drinking hits rock bottom and Bisola seeks comfort in another man. This throws them into a chaotic situation, and things may never be the same again. The story explores themes such as forgiveness, infidelity, addiction, and second chances.
This story while it was really short, gave a punch. I liked the fact that the reader was made to feel like they got to know and understand the protagonists quite well after a few pages. I have always loved this author’s style of writing and how she tells stories with the aim to get the reader to interrogate their feelings or thoughts around several biblical principles. For me, what I left the story thinking about was the question of when to know if someone has actually repented from whatever they used to do to make a decision to give them a second chance and let them back into your life. Just saying they are now saved is not enough in my opinion (and this has nothing to do with forgiveness because I strongly believe you should and can forgive someone without giving them the same access) even in a marriage. I am an advocate of second chances as God has also given us a second chance through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, but wisdom is profitable and, in this case, not to say they should have gone their separate ways as both parties erred but perhaps to spend some time getting to know each other again and building trust back. I feel like I just had a rant but that’s the beauty of reading good stories because they get you thinking.
I highly recommend this book to all lovers of Christian fiction. If you are looking for a quick read, you can finish in one sitting or if you are just starting to read Christian fiction. This may be a good place to start.
