There are seasons when you are trying to follow God, but what He is doing does not make sense to you.
You may have been praying, trusting, and taking steps in faith, yet the outcome does not look like what you expected. Things may feel delayed, unclear, or even completely different from what you believed would happen.
And in those moments, it is not always doubt that rises first. It is confusion.
You find yourself asking quiet questions like, “God, what are You doing?” or “Why is this happening this way?”
If this is where you are, you do not need to pretend you understand. You can come to God honestly and allow His Word to steady you, even before clarity comes.
Why This Matters
Not understanding what God is doing can feel unsettling because it removes your sense of control.
It can make you feel as though you are walking without direction, even when you are trying to be faithful. But Scripture reminds you that your understanding has never been the foundation of your faith. God’s character is.
When you pray His Word, you are choosing to trust who He is, even when you cannot yet see what He is doing.
10 Scriptures to Pray When You Don’t Understand What God Is Doing
1. Proverbs 3:5–6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Prayer: Lord, I release the need to understand everything right now and choose to trust You with my whole heart as You guide my path.
2. Isaiah 55:8–9
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Prayer: Help me accept that Your ways are higher than mine and trust that You see what I cannot.
3. Romans 8:28
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
Prayer: Even in what I do not understand, remind me that You are still working for my good.
4. Ecclesiastes 3:11
“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”
Prayer: Teach me to trust Your timing, even when I cannot see the full picture.
5. Psalm 33:11
“But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations.”
Prayer: Anchor me in the truth that Your plans are steady and unchanging.
6. Job 23:10
“But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold.”
Prayer: Remind me that You see my journey clearly, even when I feel uncertain.
7. Deuteronomy 29:29
“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us…”
Prayer: Help me accept what I do not yet understand and stay faithful with what You have already shown me.
8. Psalm 46:10
“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God.’”
Prayer: Quiet my need for answers and help me rest in who You are.
9. Lamentations 3:25–26
“The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.”
Prayer: Help me wait quietly and trust in Your goodness, even when I do not understand.
10. Hebrews 11:1
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Prayer: Strengthen my faith so that I can trust You even when I cannot see clearly.
Closing Reflection
Not understanding what God is doing does not mean that He is not working.
It simply means that you are being invited to trust Him at a deeper level than before.
You may not have the answers you were hoping for right now, but you are not without direction. You are being led, even in the quiet, even in the confusion.
So you do not need to force clarity or rush yourself into conclusions.
You can stay with God in this space, allowing His Word to steady your heart until understanding comes, or until trust becomes enough.
