How to Pray When You Don’t Know What to Pray Using 10 Helpful Scriptures

One of the most common struggles Christians face is not whether they should pray, but knowing what to pray.

There are seasons when your thoughts feel scattered, your emotions feel overwhelming, or your circumstances feel so complicated that you do not know where to begin. You want to talk to God, but finding the words feels difficult.

If you have ever sat down to pray and found yourself staring at a blank journal page or sitting quietly because you simply did not know what to say, you are not alone.

The good news is that prayer was never meant to depend entirely on your own words.

God has already given us something we can pray when we feel stuck: His Word.

Scripture gives us language when our own words feel inadequate. It helps us pray truth when our emotions feel confusing. And it reminds us that we can come to God honestly, even when we do not know exactly what to ask for.

Why Praying Scripture Helps

When you pray Scripture, you are not trying to impress God with eloquent words.

You are simply taking what He has already said and bringing it back to Him in prayer.

This removes the pressure of trying to think of the perfect prayer. It helps you stay anchored in truth rather than getting lost in fear, worry, or uncertainty.

A simple way to pray Scripture is to read the verse slowly and then turn it into a personal prayer.

For example:

Scripture: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” (Psalm 23:1)

Prayer: “Lord, thank You for being my Shepherd. Help me trust that You will provide everything I need today.”

It really can be that simple.

Here are ten Scriptures you can use when you do not know what to pray.

1. When You Feel Weak

Isaiah 40:29

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”

Prayer: Lord, I feel tired and weak today. Please strengthen me and help me carry what is in front of me.

2. When You Feel Overwhelmed

Psalm 61:2

“From the ends of the earth I call to You, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”

Prayer: Father, my heart feels overwhelmed. Lead me back to the security and stability that can only be found in You.

3. When You Feel Anxious

Philippians 4:6–7

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Prayer: Lord, I bring every worry and concern to You today. Fill my heart with Your peace.

4. When You Need Wisdom

James 1:5

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault.”

Prayer: Father, I need wisdom for this situation. Help me make decisions that honour You.

5. When You Feel Discouraged

Psalm 34:18

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Prayer: Thank You for being near to me. Help me remember that I do not have to walk through this season alone.

6. When You Are Waiting

Isaiah 40:31

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.”

Prayer: Lord, renew my strength while I wait and help me trust Your timing.

7. When You Need Direction

Proverbs 3:5–6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

Prayer: I do not have all the answers, but I trust that You are leading me one step at a time.

8. When You Need Peace

John 14:27

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you.”

Prayer: Fill my heart with Your peace and help me rest in Your presence.

9. When You Are Worried About Provision

Philippians 4:19

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.”

Prayer: Thank You for seeing every need in my life. Help me trust You as my provider.

10. When You Have No Words at All

Romans 8:26

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”

Prayer: Lord, I do not even know what to pray right now. Thank You that Your Spirit understands what I cannot put into words.

A Simple Way to Begin Today

If prayer feels difficult right now, do not start with ten Scriptures.

Start with one.

Read it slowly.

Read it again.

Turn it into a simple prayer.

Then sit quietly with God for a few moments.

Prayer does not have to be long to be meaningful. Sometimes a single verse prayed honestly can carry you through an entire day.

Closing Reflection

There will be seasons when words come easily and seasons when they do not.

Neither season changes God’s invitation to come to Him.

When you do not know what to pray, let Scripture guide you. Let God’s Word become the starting point for your conversation with Him.

You do not need perfect prayers.

You simply need a willing heart that keeps returning to God, even when all you have is a single verse and a simple prayer.

And often, that is more than enough.
