Rewritten

It’s been a long time coming.
Having received the baton,
Heavy-laden with expectations,
passed down from generations.
We ran the race
of how and what we should be.
We danced to the rhythm,
a tune we did not know.
Disguised in fancy costumes,
powdered faces, painted lips.
We performed.
But this,
this is not who we are.

We do not know who we are. Until we turn to him. The One who saw beyond the mask.
Who called us by name
when we forgot our own.
Who rewrote our story from tragedy to triumph.
Who gave us vision for what we could not see,
and healing for what we could not fix. No longer mirrors of others’ dreams,
no longer shadows of old fears.

We are now here.
Standing still,
breathing deep.
Unearthing.
Crushing old ideas
with trembling hands.
Scrubbing off lies
that clung like second skin.
Peeling back layers
of shoulds and shame.

We separate the ideal from the real.
We unlearn the scripts.
We walk no longer in fear
firmly, slowly,
on this road to recovery. From a distance, we see it.
A diamond,
cleaned, weighed, packaged. Not perfect, but pure.
Not flawless, but whole.

So,
we rise.
We reclaim.
We remember. And in that remembering
We finally begin
to rewrite our story
