Redeeming Your Screen Time: Creating a Digital Life That Draws You Closer to God

Most of us do not realise how much of our lives now happen through a screen.

We wake up and check our phones. We scroll during breaks. We watch videos while eating dinner. We listen to podcasts while driving. Before we know it, hours have passed and our minds have absorbed far more content than we intended.

Technology itself is not the problem.

In many ways, technology can be an incredible gift. Through our devices we can read Scripture, listen to worship music, connect with believers around the world, and access more biblical teaching than any generation in history.

The challenge is not whether we use screens.

The challenge is whether our screens are shaping us intentionally or unintentionally.

As Christians, we are called to steward every area of our lives, including our digital lives. That means asking an important question:

Is my screen time helping me grow closer to God or distracting me from Him?

The Content We Consume Shapes Us

Every day we are being discipled by something.

The books we read, the conversations we have, the music we listen to, and the content we consume all influence the way we think and live.

Proverbs 4:23 reminds us:

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Guarding our hearts is not simply about avoiding obvious sin. It also involves paying attention to the voices we allow to speak into our lives every day.

The reality is that many of us spend more time listening to social media influencers than we spend listening to Scripture.

That is not meant to create guilt. It is simply an invitation to become more intentional.

Your Feed Is Forming You

Social media algorithms are designed to give us more of whatever we engage with.

The more we watch, click, save, and share certain types of content, the more we are shown.

Over time, our feeds become reflections of our habits and interests.

That is why one of the simplest ways to redeem your screen time is to take an honest look at what appears on your screen every day.

Ask yourself:

  • Does this content encourage my faith?
  • Does it leave me feeling peaceful or anxious?
  • Does it inspire gratitude or comparison?
  • Does it draw me closer to God or further away from Him?

You do not need to follow every Christian account on the internet. But it can be helpful to intentionally curate a digital environment that supports the person you are becoming.

Building a Godly Digital Library

One of the most practical ways to redeem your screen time is to replace mindless consumption with intentional growth.

Imagine if even a small portion of your daily screen time was invested in content that encouraged your faith.

Instead of endless scrolling, you might:

  • Listen to a Christian podcast during your commute.
  • Watch a Bible teaching video while folding laundry.
  • Read a Christian ebook before bed.
  • Listen to an audiobook that strengthens your faith.
  • Save worship playlists for moments when you need encouragement.

These small shifts may seem insignificant, but over time they can have a powerful impact.

Just as unhealthy habits shape us gradually, healthy habits do as well.

You Do Not Need to Delete Everything

Sometimes conversations about technology become extreme.

Either we are told to disconnect completely or we are encouraged to consume without limits.

Most believers live somewhere in between.

The goal is not necessarily to delete every app or abandon social media entirely.

The goal is to use these tools wisely.

Jesus prayed in John 17 that His followers would be in the world but not of it.

That principle applies to our digital lives as much as any other area.

We can engage with culture without allowing culture to define us.

We can use technology without allowing technology to control us.

Start Small and Stay Consistent

Lasting change rarely happens through dramatic overhauls.

It often begins with small, sustainable choices.

Perhaps that means spending ten minutes reading Scripture before opening social media each morning.

Perhaps it means unfollowing accounts that constantly encourage comparison.

Perhaps it means replacing one evening of endless scrolling with a faith-building audiobook or Bible study.

Small changes repeated consistently often create the greatest transformation.

A Gentle Reminder

If your screen habits are not where you want them to be, there is no need for shame.

Most of us are navigating a world that constantly competes for our attention.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is intentionality.

Every time you choose content that strengthens your faith, renews your mind, or points you toward God, you are making a small investment in the person you are becoming.

And those small investments matter more than you think.

Closing Reflection

Take a moment to consider what has been shaping your thoughts lately.

Not what you wish was shaping them.

Not what you hope is shaping them.

What actually appears on your screen every day?

The answer may reveal more about your spiritual formation than you realise.

The good news is that every day offers a new opportunity to be intentional. One small choice at a time, we can build digital habits that support our faith rather than compete with it.
