We live in a time when spiritual advice is everywhere.
Open social media and you will find countless voices claiming to offer wisdom, revelation, or truth. Some quote Scripture. Others blend biblical language with ideas from popular culture, self-help, or spirituality. It can become difficult to know what is truly from God and what simply sounds convincing.
As Christians, we are not called to accept every message we hear simply because it sounds encouraging or is delivered with confidence.
We are called to exercise discernment.
That is why the Apostle John gives this instruction:
“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God…” (1 John 4:1)
Those words are just as relevant today as they were when they were first written.
Why Discernment Matters More Than Ever
Not everything that is spiritual is from God.
That may seem obvious, yet it is surprisingly easy to forget.
Many ideas sound appealing because they promise comfort, success, or personal fulfilment. But if they lead us away from the truth of God’s Word, they are not leading us closer to Him.
Jesus Himself warned that false prophets and false teachers would arise.
Discernment, therefore, is not about becoming suspicious of everyone.
It is about learning to recognise the difference between truth and error.
God’s Word Must Be Our Standard
One of the simplest ways to test any teaching is to ask:
Does it agree with Scripture?
God never contradicts Himself.
If a message encourages us to ignore biblical truth, excuse sin, or reshape God’s character to fit our preferences, we should be cautious.
This is why reading the Bible for ourselves is so important.
The more familiar we become with God’s Word, the easier it becomes to recognise teachings that are inconsistent with it.
Just as people who work with currency learn to identify counterfeit notes by studying the genuine ones, believers grow in discernment by becoming deeply familiar with the truth.
The Fruit Reveals the Source
Jesus said:
“By their fruit you will recognize them.” (Matthew 7:16)
This principle applies not only to teachers but also to the messages we receive.
Ask yourself:
- Does this teaching encourage greater love for Christ?
- Does it produce humility or pride?
- Does it point people toward obedience to God or simply toward self?
- Does it reflect the character of Jesus?
Truth produces spiritual fruit that reflects God’s character.
Messages that consistently lead to fear, confusion, manipulation, or self-exaltation deserve careful examination.
The Holy Spirit Helps Us Discern
Discernment is not simply an intellectual exercise.
It is also a work of the Holy Spirit.
As believers, we have the privilege of asking God for wisdom whenever we feel uncertain.
James 1:5 reminds us:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault…”
God delights in guiding His children.
When we approach Him with humble hearts and open Bibles, He faithfully provides the wisdom we need.
Four Practical Ways to Test the Spirits
1. Compare Every Teaching With Scripture
No preacher, author, influencer, or podcast should become your ultimate authority.
God’s Word remains the final standard.
Develop the habit of opening your Bible and examining what you hear for yourself.
2. Pray for Discernment
Ask God regularly to give you wisdom and clarity.
Discernment grows as we remain dependent upon the Holy Spirit rather than our own understanding.
3. Look Beyond Charisma
Someone may be an excellent communicator, have a large following, or speak with great confidence.
None of those qualities automatically make their teaching true.
Always look beyond personality and examine the message itself.
4. Stay Rooted in Healthy Christian Community
God never intended us to navigate our faith alone.
Faithful churches, mature believers, and trusted mentors can help us recognise error and remain grounded in biblical truth.
Sometimes others can see warning signs that we might overlook on our own.
A Gentle Reminder
Learning discernment is not about becoming fearful of every new teaching.
Nor is it about approaching every conversation with suspicion.
Biblical discernment allows us to remain both humble and wise.
We can listen carefully without believing everything we hear.
We can learn from others while allowing Scripture to remain our final authority.
God has not left His children to navigate spiritual confusion alone.
He has given us His Word, His Spirit, and the fellowship of believers to help us walk faithfully in truth.
