10 Scriptures to Pray for Healing from Past Hurt

There are some wounds that are easy to see.

A broken arm eventually heals. A cut gradually fades. A bruise disappears with time.

But emotional wounds often work differently.

Words spoken years ago can still echo in our minds. Betrayal can make it difficult to trust again. Rejection can leave us questioning our worth. Grief can linger long after everyone else seems to have moved on.

Many of us carry hurts that no one else can see.

The good news is that God sees every one of them.

He is not only concerned with healing our bodies. He also cares deeply about the healing of our hearts. Throughout Scripture, we see a God who draws near to the brokenhearted, comforts those who mourn, and gently restores those who have been wounded.

If you are carrying pain from your past today, I want to encourage you to bring it honestly before God.

One of the most powerful ways to do that is by praying His Word.

As you read these Scriptures, don’t rush through them. Read them slowly. Allow God’s truth to settle into your heart, and turn each verse into a personal prayer.

1. Psalm 147:3

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (NIV)

Prayer

Father, thank You that You see every wound I carry, even the ones no one else knows about. You are the God who heals broken hearts, and I ask You to begin healing the places in me that still carry pain. Bind up every wound with Your love, Your peace, and Your presence. Help me to trust that You are gently restoring me one day at a time. Amen.

2. Isaiah 41:10

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (NIV)

Prayer

Lord, there are days when the weight of past hurt still feels heavy. Thank You for promising never to leave me. Strengthen me when I feel weak, hold me when I feel overwhelmed, and remind me that I do not have to walk through this healing journey alone. Amen.

3. Matthew 11:28โ€“30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (NIV)

Prayer

Jesus, I bring every burden I have been carrying for far too long. I lay before You the hurt, disappointment, anger, and sadness that I have struggled to release. Thank You that You invite me to find rest in You. Teach me to exchange my heavy burdens for Your peace. Amen.

4. Psalm 34:18

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (NIV)

Prayer

Father, thank You that You never move away from those who are hurting. When I feel lonely or misunderstood, remind me that You are near. Help me experience the comfort of Your presence and the hope that comes from knowing You are walking beside me. Amen.

5. 2 Corinthians 1:3โ€“4

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles…” (NIV)

Prayer

God of all comfort, thank You for meeting me in my pain. Comfort the parts of my heart that still ache and help me receive Your peace. As You continue healing me, prepare me to one day comfort others with the same compassion You have shown me. Amen.

6. Romans 8:28

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (NIV)

Prayer

Lord, there are things that have happened in my life that I still do not understand. Although I cannot see the full picture, I choose to trust that You are able to bring beauty from brokenness. Redeem my story and use even my pain for Your glory. Amen.

7. Philippians 4:6โ€“7

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God…” (NIV)

Prayer

Father, I bring every anxious thought, painful memory, and lingering fear before You. Fill my heart with the peace that only You can give. Guard my heart and my mind as I continue trusting You with every part of my healing journey. Amen.

8. Isaiah 43:18โ€“19

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” (NIV)

Prayer

Lord, help me not to remain trapped by what has happened behind me. Give me the courage to embrace the new work You are doing in my life. Heal my heart so that my past no longer defines my future. Amen.

9. 1 Peter 5:7

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (NIV)

Prayer

Father, today I choose to place every burden into Your hands. Thank You that You care about every detail of my life, including the hidden hurts I have carried for so long. Help me release them to You instead of carrying them by myself. Amen.

10. Revelation 21:4

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (NIV)

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the hope You have given us through Christ. Thank You that one day every wound will be completely healed, every tear will be wiped away, and every sorrow will come to an end. Until that day, help me continue trusting You as You heal my heart and renew my hope. Amen.

Healing Is Often a Journey

If you’ve been praying for healing for a long time, you may sometimes wonder why it seems to take so long.

The truth is that healing is often a process rather than a single moment.

God is patient with us.

He doesn’t rush our healing or shame us for still carrying pain. Instead, He walks with us through it, gently restoring what has been broken and reminding us that we are deeply loved.

As you continue bringing your heart before Him, trust that even when you cannot yet see the change, He is still at work.

Closing Reflection

Healing from past hurt doesn’t mean pretending the pain never existed.

It means allowing God to meet you in that pain and gradually transform it with His love, His truth, and His grace.

Some wounds may heal quickly, while others take time. But throughout the journey, one thing remains certain: God has not abandoned you.

He knows every tear you have cried, every disappointment you have carried, and every burden you have struggled to release.

As you continue praying His Word, may you find comfort in His presence, strength for each new day, and the quiet assurance that the God who began a good work in you is faithful to bring it to completion. Freedom to step forward in faith, knowing that the God who calls you is also the God who faithfully walks with you every step of the way.
