Life has a way of changing when we least expect it.
One unexpected phone call, one disappointing conversation, one medical diagnosis, one financial setback, or one unanswered prayer can leave us feeling unsettled almost overnight. The plans we carefully made suddenly seem uncertain, and the confidence we felt only yesterday can quickly give way to anxiety, disappointment, or fear.
Most of us do not wake up in the morning intending to lose our peace. Rather, we find ourselves carrying burdens we never anticipated, trying to make sense of circumstances we never chose, and wondering how we are supposed to keep trusting God when so much around us feels unstable.
If you have ever found yourself in that place, you are certainly not alone.
The encouraging news is that God has never expected His children to navigate life’s uncertainties without His help. As Paul continues describing the Armour of God in Ephesians 6, he introduces two more pieces of armour that work beautifully together: the Shoes of the Gospel of Peace and the Shield of Faith. Together, they remind us that while we cannot always control our circumstances, we can remain steady because our confidence rests in Christ rather than in the changing situations around us.
The Peace Christ Gives Is Different from the Peace the World Offers

Paul writes in Ephesians 6:15,
“โฆand with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.”
When we hear the word peace, we often imagine a life where everything is going well. We picture calm circumstances, healthy relationships, financial security, answered prayers, and days free from worry or conflict. It is understandable that we think this way because much of the world’s understanding of peace depends upon what is happening around us.
Biblical peace is very different.
The peace Paul speaks about does not begin with our circumstances. It begins with our relationship with God.
Romans 5:1 reminds us,
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Before we experience the peace of God in our daily lives, we first receive peace with God through Jesus Christ. Because of His death and resurrection, our greatest need has already been met. We have been forgiven, reconciled to our Heavenly Father, adopted into His family, and given the assurance that our future is secure in Him.
That truth does not remove every challenge we will face, but it completely changes the foundation upon which we stand. When we know that we belong to Christ, we are able to face uncertainty with a confidence that cannot be produced by favourable circumstances alone.
Peace Is Rooted in Trust
One of the most beautiful promises in Scripture is found in Isaiah 26:3:
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
Notice the connection between peace and trust.
Isaiah does not say we experience peace because we understand everything God is doing. He says peace comes as our minds remain fixed on Him.
That can be difficult when life feels uncertain. Our natural instinct is to search for answers, solve every problem, or imagine every possible outcome. Yet God’s invitation is not first to understand everything. His invitation is to trust Him.
Jesus echoed this same truth when He told His disciples,
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)
The world offers peace when everything is going well.
Jesus offers peace that remains even when life is not.
That is the peace the gospel provides.
Why Paul Compares Peace to Shoes
At first glance, comparing peace to a pair of shoes may seem unusual, but Paul’s illustration becomes remarkably practical when we understand the equipment of a Roman soldier.
Roman soldiers wore sturdy sandals designed specifically for battle. Their footwear provided grip and stability on uneven ground, enabling them to stand firm when under attack. Without proper footing, even the strongest soldier could easily stumble or lose his balance.
The shoes did not fight the battle.
They simply enabled the soldier to remain standing.
The same is true of the peace Christ gives us.
God’s peace does not mean we will never experience difficult seasons. Instead, it gives us stability in the middle of them. It steadies our hearts when fear threatens to overwhelm us and enables us to keep taking the next faithful step even when we cannot yet see the whole journey ahead.
Sometimes we spend so much time asking God to remove the storm that we overlook the fact that He is also strengthening us to stand securely within it.
Faith Protects Us When Doubt Comes
Immediately after describing the Shoes of Peace, Paul tells believers,
“In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” (Ephesians 6:16)
Just as Roman shields protected soldiers from incoming attacks, faith protects our hearts and minds when the enemy seeks to fill us with fear, discouragement, or doubt.
Those fiery arrows may not be visible, but many of us recognise them all too well.
They come as thoughts that whisper, “God has forgotten you.”
“Your prayers are making no difference.”
“Things will never change.”
“You’re too late.”
“God could never use someone like you.”
The enemy cannot change God’s promises, so instead he tries to convince us not to believe them.
That is why faith is so essential.
Faith does not ignore reality or pretend that difficult things are not happening. Biblical faith simply chooses to trust God’s character even when we cannot yet understand His plans.
Hebrews 11:1 reminds us,
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Faith does not require perfect circumstances.
It requires confidence in a perfectly faithful God.
Strengthening Our Peace and Our Faith
Neither peace nor faith grows accidentally.
They are strengthened as we continue walking with God day after day.
Every time we open God’s Word, we are reminded of His unchanging character. Every answered prayer helps us remember His faithfulness. Every season He carries us through becomes another testimony that encourages us to trust Him again.
Even our waiting seasons have purpose.
Throughout Scripture we meet men and women who discovered God’s faithfulness while they waited. Abraham waited. Hannah waited. Joseph waited. David waited. Although their circumstances were different, they all learned that God’s apparent silence never meant His absence.
Perhaps you are waiting for God today.
If so, continue praying.
Continue trusting.
Continue walking faithfully.
God is still working, even when you cannot yet see what He is doing.
Peace and Faith Were Always Meant to Work Together
There is a beautiful reason Paul places these two pieces of armour side by side.
Peace steadies our feet.
Faith raises our shield.
Peace reminds us that God is with us.
Faith reminds us that God is trustworthy.
Peace quiets our anxious hearts.
Faith enables us to keep moving forward even when we cannot yet see how the story will unfold.
Whether you are praying for healing, waiting for a new opportunity, caring for someone you love, navigating financial uncertainty, or simply carrying burdens that no one else sees, these two gifts from God help you remain steady.
They do not promise an easy journey.
They remind you that you never walk that journey alone.

Closing Reflection
Life will always bring seasons that test our peace and stretch our faith. We cannot predict every challenge that lies ahead, nor can we always understand why certain prayers seem to take longer than we hoped.
Yet the good news of the gospel is that our confidence has never depended on having all the answers.
Our confidence rests in the One who walks with us through every season.
As you continue your journey with Christ, may His peace steady your heart when life feels uncertain, and may your faith continue to grow as you remember that the God who has carried you this far remains just as faithful today as He has always been.se two realities remain together, you will find yourself standing firm, not because you have all the answers, but because your life is being built upon the One who never changes.
