Some wounds are easy to recognise.
They come from experiences we can clearly identify, moments that changed the course of our lives or left us carrying grief that we never expected. Other wounds are much quieter. They are formed through words that stayed with us long after they were spoken, disappointments we never fully processed, relationships that ended painfully, or seasons of life that left us feeling unseen, rejected, or forgotten.
Although time has a way of helping us move forward, it does not always heal everything we carry.
There are moments when an unexpected conversation, a familiar place, or a seemingly ordinary memory reminds us that part of our heart is still tender. We may have learned how to function, how to smile, and how to keep going, yet deep within us there remains a place that still needs God’s healing touch.
The beautiful thing about bringing our hurts to God is that He never asks us to pretend they are not there. Throughout Scripture, we see a God who draws close to the brokenhearted, who understands grief, and who gently restores what has been wounded.
If you are carrying pain from your past, these Scriptures can become prayers that help you place those hurts into God’s hands, trusting that healing is often a journey rather than a single moment.
Why Pray Scripture When Your Heart Is Hurting?

When we have been hurt, our thoughts often become shaped by the pain we have experienced.
We may begin believing that we are somehow defined by what happened to us, that we will always carry the weight of those memories, or that healing is something other people experience but never quite seems to reach us.
Praying Scripture gently interrupts those thoughts by allowing God’s truth to become louder than the stories our pain sometimes tells us.
Rather than searching for the right words to say, we begin with what God has already spoken. His promises remind us that our wounds are seen, our tears matter to Him, and our future is not determined by our past.
As you pray through these verses, do not feel pressured to rush. Read them slowly, allow them to settle in your heart, and let each prayer become another step towards the healing that God desires for you.
1. Psalm 147:3
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Prayer
Father, You know every wound I carry, including the ones I rarely speak about. Thank You that You are close to the brokenhearted and that nothing I have experienced is hidden from You. Please continue healing the places in my heart that still feel tender, and help me trust that Your healing is taking place even when I cannot yet see it.
2. Isaiah 41:10
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.”
Prayer
Lord, when painful memories leave me feeling anxious or uncertain, remind me that I do not have to face them alone. Help me rest in the assurance that You are with me, strengthening me and holding me securely through every part of my healing journey.
3. Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Prayer
Jesus, I bring before You the burdens I have carried for far too long. Teach me to lay them down at Your feet instead of continuing to carry them on my own. Fill my heart with the rest that only You can give.
4. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
“The Father of compassion and the God of all comfort… comforts us in all our troubles.”
Prayer
Father, thank You for being the God of all comfort. Meet me in the places where I still feel pain and remind me that Your compassion is greater than my deepest sorrow. As You continue healing me, help me one day become a source of encouragement to someone else walking a similar road.
5. Psalm 34:18
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Prayer
Lord, thank You that You draw near rather than turning away when my heart feels broken. Help me become more aware of Your presence, especially on the days when healing feels slow and difficult.
6. Romans 8:28
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.”
Prayer
Father, I may never fully understand why certain things happened, but I trust that You are able to bring beauty from what has been broken. Help me believe that my story is still being written and that You are working even now for my good.
7. Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything… and the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Prayer
Lord, when painful memories steal my peace, help me bring those thoughts to You instead of carrying them alone. Guard my heart and my mind, and fill me with the peace that comes from knowing You are in control.
8. Lamentations 3:22-23
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed… great is your faithfulness.”
Prayer
Thank You, Father, that Your mercy is new every morning. Even when yesterday still feels heavy, help me receive the fresh grace You offer today and trust that each new day brings another opportunity for healing.
9. Joel 2:25
“I will restore to you the years that the locusts have eaten.”
Prayer
Lord, there are moments when I feel as though pain has stolen so much from my life. Thank You that You are a God of restoration. Help me trust that nothing placed in Your hands is beyond Your ability to redeem.
10. Revelation 21:4
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.”
Prayer
Father, thank You for the hope that one day every wound will be healed completely. Until that day comes, help me continue walking with You, knowing that my present pain is not the end of my story.
Healing Is Often Gentler Than We Expect
We sometimes imagine healing as a dramatic moment when all our pain disappears at once.
While God certainly has the power to heal instantly, many of us discover that emotional and spiritual healing unfolds much more gently. It happens as we continue bringing our hearts to God in prayer, allowing His Word to reshape the way we think, learning to trust Him with memories that still hurt, and gradually discovering that the wounds which once defined us no longer hold the same power over our lives.
That process can require patience, and there may be days when it feels as though little has changed. Yet even in those moments, God is still at work. Healing is not always measured by the absence of painful memories, but by the growing awareness that those memories no longer determine our identity or our future because Christ is making all things new within us.
A Gentle Reminder
If you are still healing from something that happened years ago, please do not believe the lie that you should be “over it” by now.
Healing is not a race, and comparing your journey with someone else’s rarely brings peace.
God is infinitely patient with the work He is doing in your heart. He is not disappointed by your tears, frustrated by your questions, or discouraged by the pace of your healing. He simply continues inviting you to come to Him, trusting that His grace is sufficient for every step of the journey.

Closing Reflection
Healing from past hurt is rarely about forgetting what happened. More often, it is about allowing God’s love to reach the places where pain has quietly shaped the way we see ourselves, other people, and even Him.
As you continue bringing your heart before the Lord, trust that He is working with a tenderness and patience that only He can offer. The One who created your heart also knows how to restore it, and although healing may not happen as quickly as you would like, His faithfulness is not measured by speed but by His constant presence with you through every step of the journey.
The chapters that wounded you do not have to become the chapters that define you.
Your story is still being written, and the God who has carried you this far is more than able to lead you into a future marked not by your deepest pain, but by His redeeming grace.
