“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1 (KJV)
As we come to the end of our journey through Genesis, I have found myself reflecting on why God chose to begin the Bible this way. Out of all the places Scripture could have started, God begins with creation, a garden, a family, a promise and generations of ordinary people learning, often very slowly, what it means to trust Him.
Over the past eleven episodes, we have walked through the lives of Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, Leah, Rachel, Joseph and many others. We have celebrated moments of remarkable faith, grieved heartbreaking failures and witnessed God’s faithfulness through every generation. Yet when I look back over the whole book of Genesis, I don’t think its primary purpose is simply to introduce us to these individuals.
Genesis introduces us to God.
Every story, every promise, every disappointment and every restoration reveals something about His character. Before Genesis teaches us who we are, it teaches us who He is, and perhaps that is why this book remains just as important today as it was when it was first written.
Genesis Helps Us Understand the World We Live In
One of the reasons I believe Genesis remains so relevant is because it answers questions people are still asking today.
Why is the world so beautiful and yet so broken?
Why do we long for peace while constantly experiencing conflict?
Why do relationships become strained?
Why do suffering, injustice and death exist at all?
Genesis does not ignore these questions. Instead, it traces them back to humanity’s decision to live independently of God.
When Adam and Eve chose to disobey God, sin entered the world, and its effects spread far beyond the Garden of Eden. As we continued reading through Genesis, we watched those consequences unfold from one generation to the next. Cain murdered Abel. Violence filled the earth before the flood. Pride led to the Tower of Babel. Families experienced jealousy, deception, favouritism and betrayal.
The remarkable thing is that Genesis never pretends humanity can solve these problems by itself. Instead, it gently reminds us that the deepest problem in the world has always been a problem of the human heart.
That truth can sometimes feel uncomfortable, but it is also deeply hopeful because if our greatest need is God, then the solution begins not with trying harder but with returning to Him.
Genesis Is Really a Story About God’s Faithfulness
One of the things that became increasingly clear as we worked through Genesis is that none of its central characters were perfect.
Noah obeyed God, yet his story did not end without failure.
Abraham trusted God’s promises, yet there were moments when fear led him to make poor decisions.
Sarah struggled to wait.
Jacob relied on deception before learning to depend on God.
Joseph experienced betrayal, disappointment and years of waiting.
If Genesis were simply a collection of stories about heroes, it would be a rather discouraging book because every one of them eventually falls short.
Instead, Genesis is the story of a faithful God who continues working through imperfect people.
That has encouraged me so much because it reminds me that God does not wait until our lives are flawless before inviting us to walk with Him. He patiently teaches, corrects, restores and transforms us as we continue growing in our relationship with Him.
When I think back over the whole book, I realise that while every person changed in different ways, God’s character never did.
He remained faithful.
He kept His promises.
He never abandoned His covenant.
He continued working, even when the people He had called struggled to trust Him.
Faith Is a Journey, Not a Single Moment
Another lesson that stands out so clearly throughout Genesis is that faith grows over time.
One of the things I have enjoyed most about recording this season is watching these familiar Bible characters become real people again rather than names we simply recognise from Sunday school.
Abraham did not become the man we admire overnight.
Jacob was not transformed into Israel in a single day.
Joseph did not move from the pit to the palace without years of waiting in between.
Their stories remind us that walking with God is rarely about one dramatic moment. More often than not, it is about choosing to trust Him one step at a time, allowing Him to shape our character through both joyful seasons and difficult ones.
I think that is particularly encouraging for those of us who sometimes feel as though our spiritual growth is slower than we would like.
God is patient.
He is not rushing us through the journey.
Just as He faithfully walked with Abraham, Jacob and Joseph over many years, He continues walking patiently with us today.
God’s Story Is Always Bigger Than Ours
One of the beautiful discoveries we made throughout Genesis is that God was never working in only one person’s life at a time.
While Joseph was learning faithfulness in Egypt, God was also transforming Judah.
While Abraham was learning to trust God’s promises, God was preparing future generations through whom those promises would continue.
Even the chapters that initially seemed disconnected became part of a much larger story.
I think we often forget that because we naturally see life from our own perspective.
We become focused on our own prayers, our own disappointments and our own hopes, yet God is weaving together countless stories at the same time.
He is opening doors we cannot yet see.
He is preparing people we have not yet met.
He is arranging circumstances long before we understand why.
That doesn’t mean we will always understand what He is doing, but Genesis reminds us that we can trust the One who sees the whole picture.
A Gentle Next Step
Now that you have reached the end of Genesis, don’t rush on too quickly.
Take a little time this week to reflect on everything you have discovered throughout these opening chapters of the Bible. Think about the ways God’s character has been revealed, the promises He has made and the faithfulness He has shown through every generation.
Then ask yourself this simple question:
What have I learnt about God through Genesis that I want to carry with me into the rest of Scripture and into my own walk with Him?
Sometimes the most valuable part of studying the Bible is not simply finishing another book, but allowing what we have learnt to shape the way we know and trust God.
Closing Reflection
Genesis begins with the words, “In the beginning God…” and by the time we reach the final chapter, we discover that those opening words have quietly shaped everything that follows.
From creation to Joseph, we have seen a God who creates, provides, judges, forgives, calls, transforms and faithfully keeps every promise He has ever made. People failed, circumstances changed and generations came and went, but God remained the same.
Perhaps that is the greatest lesson Genesis leaves us with.
The God we meet in the opening pages of Scripture is still the God who walks with us today. He is still faithful when life feels uncertain, still patient when our faith is growing, and still working even when we cannot yet see the whole story.
As we prepare to continue our journey into Exodus, we do so with confidence, knowing that the God who was faithful in the beginning will continue to be faithful to the very end.tinue to strengthen everyone who chooses to place their trust in Him.
